Routine Neutering
Neutering is a routine procedure that plays an important role in your pet’s long-term health and wellbeing. From preventing unwanted pregnancies to reducing the risk of certain diseases and behaviours, it is a proactive step in responsible pet ownership.

Why neuter your pet?
Neutering is recommended for a number of medical and behavioural reasons. It prevents unwanted pregnancies and can significantly reduce the risk of certain conditions, including ovarian, mammary, and testicular cancers. In some pets, neutering can also help manage behaviours influenced by hormones. For example, male cats are less likely to spray indoors or roam far from home, reducing their risk of injury or getting lost. Our team will always be happy to discuss the best timing for your pet based on their species, breed, and lifestyle.
Neutering—whether for a dog, cat, or rabbit—is performed under a general anaesthetic and requires a day with us at Vet in the City.
While these procedures are considered routine, we work to the highest clinical standards at every stage. Your pet will be closely monitored throughout their anaesthetic, during surgery, and in the recovery period by our experienced veterinary team, ensuring their safety and comfort at all times.
On the day of the procedure
Your pet will be admitted in one of our first appointments of the day. Before the procedure, we will provide clear guidance on pre-operative care, including fasting instructions.
Once the procedure is complete and your pet is recovering well, they will usually be ready to return home with you later the same day. We will provide full discharge instructions to support a smooth recovery at home.
Recovery and aftercare
Recovery from neutering typically takes around 10–14 days. During this time, it is important to restrict activity and follow the aftercare advice provided.
We will arrange a post-operative check to ensure your pet is healing well and to monitor for any signs of complications.
Our team remains on hand throughout the recovery period should you have any questions or concerns.
