A Day in the Life of an RVN at Vet in the City

When you visit Vet in the City, you might notice our Vets taking the spotlight—but behind every consultation, surgery, and treatment, it’s our RVNs who make sure your pets are safe, comfortable, and getting the very best care.

From inpatient monitoring to nurse clinics, surgery support, lab work, and emergency care, our RVNs do it all.

In this blog, we’ll take you through a day in the life of our veterinary nurses, showing you exactly how Nancy (Head Veterinary Nurse), Eleanor, and Maireád care for your pets every single day.

What Does a Veterinary Nurse Do?

You might be wondering: what does a veterinary nurse do? Well, at Vet in the City, our RVNs are involved in nearly every part of your pet’s care.

They’re there from the moment a patient arrives—whether it’s for a routine check-up, surgery, or an emergency.

Inpatient Care: Keeping Pets Comfortable & Safe

One of the most important parts of a veterinary nurse’s day is inpatient care.

Our RVNs monitor pets who are staying in the clinic, ensuring they are comfortable, safe, and recovering well. They check vital signs, manage pain relief, administer medications, and make sure every patient is happy and stress-free. Gentle handling, reassuring voices, and even a favourite blanket or treat make a huge difference.

“We treat every patient like they’re one of our own,” says Maireád. “Seeing a pet recover and leave happy is the best part of our day.”

Nurse Clinics: Preventative Care for Cats and Dogs

Our RVNs run nurse clinics, helping keep pets healthy with regular care. These clinics include:

  • Routine pet health checks

  • Nail clips and anal gland expression for dogs and cats

  • Nutrition and behavioural advice

  • Second vaccinations and monthly injections

Nurse clinics are perfect for preventative care, giving owners advice and treatments in a relaxed, friendly environment.

Surgery & Anaesthesia: Safe & Compassionate Care

Surgery is another area where our RVNs are essential. They assist Vets in operations, preparing the theatre, monitoring patients under general anaesthesia, and supporting recovery.

Whether it’s a spay, neuter, or more complex procedure, Nancy, Eleanor, and Maireád ensure every patient is safe, calm, and receiving expert care.

Lab Work, Emergency Care & Communication

From taking blood samples to running lab tests for pets, our RVNs help diagnose conditions and monitor ongoing treatments. In emergencies, they’re often first on the scene—triaging patients, providing stabilisation, and supporting Vets every step of the way.

Communication is also key. Our RVNs collaborate with Vets to update treatment plans and explain care instructions to owners, making sure you always know what’s happening with your pet.

Championing the Role of Our RVNs

Nancy, Eleanor, and Mairead are a vital part of Vet in the City. They combine skill, dedication, and compassion to care for every patient, from routine health checks to emergency care.

Next time you visit, remember: it’s not just the Vets keeping your pets healthy—it’s the teamwork, expertise, and care of our RVNs that make all the difference.

Whether it’s running nurse clinics for dogs and cats near you, assisting in surgery, or monitoring pets in hospital, our RVNs are working behind the scenes to ensure your pets are safe, happy, and loved.

Meet Maireád: An RVN at Vet in the City

We recently spoke with Maireád to learn more about her journey as a veterinary nurse. In the video below, she shares what drew her to the role, what a typical day looks like, and the most rewarding—and challenging—parts of her job.
